> One day, Raskolnikov, who had stopped studying at university due to poverty, meets retired official Marmeladov at a tavern and hears a story about his daughter Sonya, who became a prostitute to support her family.

Raskolnikov defines the old woman, a vicious businessman, as a‘social evil’ who exploits even his own younger sister.
